Overview

Trae is an AI-native code editor launched by ByteDance, positioned as a domestic alternative to Cursor. It is built on VS Code, featuring AI code completion, conversational programming, and Agent (SOLO) mode, deeply integrating the Doubao large model and several mainstream large models.

**Note: Trae is no longer a completely free product.** Starting February 24, 2026, Trae has fully transitioned its billing from "per-use" to "**per-token**", simultaneously launching five subscription tiers: **Free / Speed Pro / Speed Pro+ / Speed Ultra / Express**. The free version retains all features and allows continued use of mainstream models, but has the lowest cloud task concurrency (only 2); paid tiers primarily unlock higher "queue-skip speed passes" and more cloud task concurrency, with Ultra/Express tiers also offering priority access to SOTA models.

**Latest Update: Trae has expanded into two product lines—TRAE Work (Professional AI Work Assistant) and TRAE IDE (10x AI Coding Engineer), and now supports a Web version.**

Summary

Trae initially marketed itself as "completely free," but has now expanded into two product lines, TRAE Work and TRAE IDE, and launched a Web version. The free version still retains core AI programming features, suitable for light users; paid tiers offer higher concurrency and speed passes to meet heavy demands. Overall, Trae has transformed from a single AI code editor into a comprehensive AI tool platform covering programming and work assistance.
